My coworker and I stayed in Margaritaville San Diego for a conference last year and I forwarded this to her and we both scream laughed at our desks. But one of my favorite mysteries of the experience was seeing the phrase "Fins Up" everywhere and we were like "what does that mean? Is it like...a surfboard thing or...sharks...or what..." and then we googled it and ParrotHeads are not even clear on what it means exactly, just like a general expression of good vibes.
as the daughter of 2 overzealous parrotheads and growing up on jimmy buffett, seeing your debut buffett experience is top. tier. fins up is in reference to the song "Fins" and when he would perform it, everyone throws their hands up & together to mimic being a shark. also, pro tip, all the food is bad. drinks can be a solid 7.5/10, but the true experience is the experience. 100% agree with your sentiment on metaphysical experience vs physical one. im still tempted to visit the resort though, just for shits n gigs!!! this was my first read from you & im definitely coming back for more
My husband and I went to a Margaritaville in Florida. I was underwhelmed, but I took the metaphysical attitudinal route and gave myself up to the idea of a metaphysical experience.
John Paul, I loved your description of what a true Margaritaville should be. Maybe they need to dole out those goggles that put you into a certain scene and ours would be your Margaritaville. Fun!
WOULD YOU BELIEVE I AM READING THIS FROM A MARGARITAVILLE? It's a regional one—I'm in the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri—but I'm living this fins up lifestyle right now, ha! *Change of latitude, change of attitude*

This reminds me of David Foster Wallace's essay about the hell of having fun on a cruise ship, except more concise and playful. Keep up this series!

The resort in Hollywood, Florida is probably the best.

John Paul, your synopsis of the song is insightful. I had never really thought about the guy’s desperation and trying to hang on. Man.
